We at Dr. Scheier's office are committed to helping our patients look and feel great. We've discussed the connection between oral health and heart health, but even between your visits, there are many ways you can start building healthy habits and living longer! A recent article from askmen.com highlights 6 easy habits to get started with. One of them is a habit that we preach to http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifour patients every day!
Exercise- some studies suggest that daily exercise can add as much as three years to your life
Eat a Healthy Breakfast- while eating healthy in general is always a great rule to live by, a balanced breakfast is an important part of feeling and being healthier.
Get Enough Sleep- While there is still some debate over how much sleep we really need, sleeping less than seven hours a night can lead to major health issues.
Brush and Floss Daily- A tip we tell our patients every day, your oral health is truly a critical part of your overall health too!
Stay Social- A healthy social life spent with friends is another important factor to a healthy lifestyle that many people overlook.
Drink Enough Water- While the jury is still out on the "eight glasses a day" rule, the message is still a good one.
Hope these tips help!

More happy patients at Dr. Scheier's office!
Dr. Mitchell Scheier, serving Havertown, PA and surrounding areas, has been receiving some great patient reviews lately! Check out what our current patients had to say about Dr. Scheier and team when they were asked, "Is there anyone you would like to recognize for outstanding or less-than-outstanding service?""Everyone at the office is ALWAYS kind, helpful and friendly. I'm so glad to have a dentist that I like and also feel comfortable to bring my young children to." ~Aiden
"It would really be unfair for me to pick one person for outstanding service. Recently, I learned how happy the employees are and how dedicated they are behind the scenes. Loyality is huge for me, and it's important for me and my daughter to be comfortable." ~Tanja
"Actually, I thought that every single person I encountered at the office was friendly, professional, I couldn't have asked for better service!!!" ~Kim

Gummy Tummy!
We know the rumors going around – mostly among young people – that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry! This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!
Happy (sugar-free) gum chewing!

A great article about changes in dentistry, from Dr. Scheier
The world around us is always changing and evolving, whether it’s the latest gadget you ordered online or the high-tech braces on your teeth! Recently, we read an article in the New York Times about dental implants, and how they are becoming increasingly favored over bridges to replace lost teeth. One thing to remember about dental implants is that they need to be cared for just like your regular teeth; daily brushing and flossing are a must! Call us today to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation with Dr. Scheier to discuss your implant options.

Ask Dr. Scheier: What can Invisalign® do for my oral health?
When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than traditional braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with Dr. Mitchell Scheier than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health. Here’s how:Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.
Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.
Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.
If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Scheier the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.

Ask Dr. Scheier: How do I know what toothbrush is right for my child?
Dr. Mitchell Scheier will tell you that brushing your teeth is one of the easiest methods of cavity prevention. But which type of toothbrush should your child use? When choosing a toothbrush, look for round-ended (polished) bristles that clean while being gentle on the gums. Choose one that is specifically designed for children's smaller mouths and hands. Also, look for large handles that can help children control the toothbrush. Lastly, throw out a toothbrush after three months or sooner if the bristles are fraying. Frayed bristles can harm your gums, and are not as effective in cleaning teeth. As far as which toothpaste is best? It doesn't matter as long as it has fluoride in it. However, for small children who tend to swallow toothpaste, do not use fluoridated toothpaste. Make sure to touch each tooth and every side of that tooth. Also, you do need to gently brush on your gums.
To learn more about choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your child, we encourage you to read this helpful article from Parenthood.com. Or, you may give us a call and we'll try to answer any question you may have about keeping your child's mouth as healthy as possible!

Fun fact Friday!!
Everyone loves fun facts. Fun, fun, fun. Our staff at Mitchell D. Scheier and Associates thought we'd throw some fun facts your way on this Friday afternoon. Enjoy!• Your set of teeth is as unique as your fingerprint. No two people have the same set of teeth. It is as unique as your fingerprint and even identical twins are different.
• Most tooth loss in people under 35 years of age is caused by athletic trauma, fights, or accidents. The cause of most tooth loss in people over 35 is periodontal disease. Remember to brush and floss!
• Approximately 200,000 athletes per year save face by covering their pearly whites with mouth guards during sporting events.
• The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva (spit) in a lifetime. That's enough saliva to fill two swimming pools!
• The average woman smiles about 62 times a day. Men smile only 8 times. Kids laugh around 400 times a day. Grown-ups, however, laugh just 15.
• If you're right handed, you will chew your food on your right side. If you're a leftie, you will tend to chew your food on your left side.
